Grid parity calculator

Compares a solar cost per kWh with the grid price it replaces, in real (constant) money. Every preset value is invented. A design aid, not a forecast or financial advice. Decimal commas are accepted; write 1000, not 1.000.

Solar cost, LCOE (USD per kWh)-
Year-1 value per kWh (USD)-
Levelised value per kWh (USD)-
Gap: value minus cost (USD per kWh)-
Parity today?-
Break-even year-1 value (USD per kWh)-
Break-even installed price (USD per W)-
First purchase year with parity-

Model: LCOE = (installed price + present value of O&M) / present value of energy, with year-end flows, energy falling by the degradation rate and a real discount rate. The year-1 value per kWh = share on site x grid price + (1 - share) x export price. The levelised value weights that value by each year's discounted energy, so a real rise lifts it. Parity means levelised value is at or above LCOE. The break-even price is the installed price at which they are equal. The purchase-year test moves the installed price by the yearly change and the value by the real rise, from today (year 0), up to year 80. Before tax and incentives. The rise applies to the whole blended value.
